Hope you all read the first chapter of the The Red Pony. Below are the questions. Please answer atleast 2 questions, but we would love it if you could answer all of them.
Make sure your answers are atleast 5 sentences, the sentences are complete sentences, and that your opinions have supporting details.
1)Who is the main character of the story? Do you like him/her– why or why not?
2)Would you like to have a pony – why or why not?
3)What time period does the story occur (ancient times, pioneer days, present day, future) – how do you know?
4) Do you like the way this author tells the story – why or why not?
5) Would you like to live on a farm – why or why not?
Aunt Ramona and Aunt Saima
1) Jody is the main character, but the pony can also be it too. When the pony got sick it was talking about how it was doing. But also how Jody was feeling about it. And when Jody got the pony he felt surprised.
ReplyDelete3) I think it is the pioneer times because people we traveling on horses. And when Jody's dad had to go and herd the animals. Also they used the triangle to wake them self up. These are some reasons I know that it is the pioneer days.

DeleteGood point! I agree with you that the pony can also be considered as the main character after all the name of the book is titled "The Red Pony". Can you explain why you like/dislike the pony and/or Jody? What actions make you feel this way?
Ramona Anti
Jody is a caring person so far in the story for hes red pony so I think I like him.
ReplyDeleteNo, I think it would just be to show off your red pony we have cars today so there is no use to ride them either.
It occurs in the pioneer days, they have saddles and horses but no cars.
Yes he tells it like he was their and in like third-person.
I would not want to live on the farm because the other kids would be miles away instead of in a town where it is walking distance.
1) The main character in "The Red Pony" is Jody. He is a boy still going to school. I think he is an average guy, but I believe that he frets too much over his pony while he is away. A positive thing about Jody is that he actually cares for his pony. I have seen characters that just shrug off their pets and let them basically live on their own.
ReplyDelete5) I would not live on a farm because I would be far away from the "happening place", or where I can be fairly close to downtown. With living on a farm comes lots of chores to maintain it and a large "backyard". So thus, I would be mowing for a lot longer than the few hours that I mow now.
Umar
DeleteInteresting points - what is so bad about chores?
Ramona Anti
woops just realized that 2 of them have to be in paragraph
ReplyDeleteso here they are.
1. Jody is a caring person so far into the story. He cares for his pony a lot like if he can't find the blanket to cover him he will find something else. He even asks if it is going to rain today to see if the pony should be inside or not. He is probably a very good animal person like in The Red Fern Grows they cared for the animals a lot. So I decide that that is why I like him as a caring person.
4. I really like how the authors tells the story. It is like he was really there, but he is not describing himself. I would think that he might have actually been one person but he does not describe himself. I feel like this is kind of like a third-person form. I mean third person like maybe he was there as I said earlier. I think this is the best way to tell a story.
Response To Other People:
ReplyDeleteNimah, wait is this Nimah or Aliza? Anyway
1) Good information but need to put it into a bit more organized.
3) Nice, the Mom/Dad rings the triangle to wake up everyone else.
Hanif:
1) Be more descriptive in what you are saying. You are only touching the surface and not really diving into detail.
4) Hanif, the book is in 1st person meaning the story is shown form the main character, Jody's, perspective. 3rd person would be when the book tells the reader something that is going on that the main character doesn't know about.
I think that the main character is Jody. But since there sometimes can be more than one main character, I would also include Billy and the pony. The reason I included Billy is because he help the pony and takes care of it. He also made the prediction that it wouldn't rain, when it did. The reason I included the pony is because most the main events in the first part are based on the pony.
ReplyDeleteI would not like to live on a farm, mainly because of the transportation systems. In farms, you mostly travel by horses. Most people think its fun, and it could be. But the problem is that it would take weeks, or maybe even a month to properly tame and train a horse to ride properly. In present time, we can drive with our parents. On horses, only one person can ride at a time.
Thought provoking comments - Please pick one of your main characters and explain why you like/dislike him.
DeleteThanks everyone for your comments! I see you all read, and put decent thought in your answers. And you all followed rules and answered two questions, at the very least.
ReplyDeleteEither Ramona auntie, or I, will send you feedback on your responses, via email.
Next week, I'll start some online discussions. I'll begin with certain observations/comments, and you can comment on them ... hence the online discussions.
Thanks everyone for following through!

Chapter 2 Questions:
1) Have you heard the song "The Bear Went Over the Mountain" before? Why did Mrs. Tiflin (Jody's mom) reference it in this chapter?
2) Jody described Gitano as "an old paisano man", which means a rustic or peasant - do you think that is an accurate description? Why or why not?
3)If Gitano would have came to your home and demanded to stay there, what would you have done?
4)From Carl Tiflin's perspective, how do you think he felt about Gitano taking Easter? Explain why.
5) Did the first chapter of the book have anything to do with the second chapter? Does the author's writing make sense? Explain why or why not you feel the author was correct to structure the book in this way.
2) For the time period that this book is set, yes, it do believe that is an accurate description. He is an old man who can barley do anything anymore, thus becoming the description of a peasant. Now, if I were to say someone was a paisano man in this day and age, then I would get never ending criticism.
Delete4) I don't think Mr. Tiflin really cared. If anything he wanted to get rid of the old horse. But I also believe another part of him was mad at Gitano for taking his first horse. So Mr. Tiflin has mixed feelings about the horse Easter and Billy is going against whatever Mr. Tiflin is saying.
Hey there Umar, Asalaam alaikum.
DeleteWhy would you get never ending criticism if you called someone a paisano?
I agree with you, I don't think Mr. Tiflin cared one way or the other about the horse. Nice catch about the mixed feelings!
Saima
2) I think that it is an accurate description about him, because he is unable to do any work. And like Gitano said " I will stay here till i die," means he know he done his work and will wait till he dies. Also by the way he was traveling (with only a small cloth bag) it shows that he is an old peasant.
ReplyDelete5) To me the first chapter had absolutely nothing to do with the second. But it makes sense because the first chapter was about the horse and how it was, but since it died the author has nothing to write about the pony. Concluding to that the author's structure was correct about writing something else.

DeleteAsalaam Alaikum Aliza.
DeleteNice comment. I like how you provided incidents, quotes, observations from the book to support your thought! Good job!
2) So you think peasants don't do any work? And could you elaborate on the 'he know he done his work and will wait till he dies' part? Also, do you think peasants don't have too many belongings?
5) I like your assessment of the chapters and the structuring of the book. Very matter of fact and simple! Nice writing!
Saima
Well...
Delete2) Peasants are poor (most of the time) so he might not be carrying many stuff. Also, peasants work, bot since he was old he was not fit or capable of doing work.
2. I believe that is accurate yes. I believe that because he is old and needed to be taken care of. His house go destroyed and he had to move to the ranch. He moved there even though Carl said not to. Carl though let him stay for one night then sent him on his way to his friends or his relatives.
ReplyDelete4. I believe that he did not care about the horse. I know that Billy Buck did though he even asked should we go after him. He even said and i quote " just save me burying that horse." He said before that though "they never get to old to steal" I think he cares but not that much. Though after that they decided not to follow them after he stole Easter the horse.
Hanif!!!!
DeleteAsalaam alaikum. I lovvveee how you brought in the quotes to support both sides of the arguments in answering question number 4. Yes, Billy definitely seemed to be more caring than Carl! Great job with the supporting argument!
Saima
1) I think that, in some ways Gitano is a paisano. But he just wants to live in an edible house. Maybe his family doesn't like him, or maybe he can't travel that far. But if i were him, i wouldn't go to strangers and ask them to accept a stranger into their home. And, the main reason that they (Jody's Family) cant afford for another person to take care of.
ReplyDelete2) I dont think that the chapters we have read so far are in chronological order. However, i have a hunch that the last chapter might be set after all the events in the previous chapters. And actually, they aren't chapters. The book is split into 4 parts, so they aren't necessarily in chronological order. If you think about it, it is sort of like the adventures of robin hood. They arent in order, yet they all have the same people and setting.
Humza:
Delete1) Well actually he wanted to stay at the ranch because he was born there, which he repeated many times. Maybe his family doesn't like him, but the main reason is because he was born there.
2) I agree on what you said. It is like parts, not the same as others. I also liked when you used "text to text" when you were relating the story to robin hood.
Just thought you would like to know
Just making some corrections my mom pointed out to me
ReplyDeleteoh, um, i meant livable house. But those can still be tasty, right :) (edible means food that is ok for eating lol)
"And, the main reason is that they (Jody's Family) cant afford for another person to take care of.
And for heaven's sake, if this publisher asks me to confirm my humanity one more time.......
dont look at me like that. i got humor, ok
ReplyDeleteThree posts! Nice. I see you're trying to make up for lost time ....
DeleteI agree that the chapters are detached. Interesting take that they're not really chapters. It's up to an author how he/she wants to divide his writing into. It always helps the reader when a book is broke up into smaller chunks. What made you think the chapters aren't in chronological order? I felt they all are, albeit not connected necessarily.
If he wanted to live in an edible house ... of course his family didn't want to live with him ;).
Jokes apart, good observations and very good points about how he may not want to travel, or that Jody's family couldn't afford him.
