Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Chapters 1 - 15

Asalaam Alaikum everyone,

NOTE -  Apologies for the late posting of chapters 3 and 4 (The Red Pony).   For some reason, even though the blogs were published, they were private and couldn't be viewed.  Nevertheless, they are all there now.

For those of you who couldn't find it - you have till Friday to publish your answers for chapters 3 and 4.

Onto Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ...

Hope everyone is doing well.  So, please read the first 15 chapters (if you have a 30 chapter book).

Then, answer any 2 of the questions below:

  1. Describe the environment and times that Charlie lives in?  What are his family dynamics?   What's his daily life like?  Does he have chores, homework, responsibility?  Compare and contrast with your daily life and your living environment, and with those around you.
  2. Does Charlie have a quest, or a purpose, or a goal in life?  What keeps him going?  Does he ever feel low, or very saddened, in life?  Why?  When?  Does he ever feel like he's the luckiest person alive?  Why?  When?
  3. How do you think Grandpa Joe compares to other grandfathers?  Do you think his presence, and negative or positive attitude contributes affects Charlie in anyway?  How so?
  4. Would you classify Charlie as a selfless person, a selfish person, or neither?  Why?  Give specific examples (atleast 2) from the book to support your argument.

Good luck and happy reading!

  1. 4) I think Charlie is a selfless person because he shared his chocolate with his family even though they said no. Also instead of worrying what would happen if his grandpa came he just let his grandpa come.

    3) I think Grandpa Joe is unlike any other grandparent (mostly referring to father) because if someone is really old the shouldn't be able to "burst" with energy. I think his positive energy rubbed off on Charlie so instead of being afraid (until or unless something bad happened) he was excited.

  2. 3) Grandpa Joe unlike other grandpas i've seen. He was usually sleeps but when Charlie shows him the god ticket he starts jumping around like a chicken without a head. Also i think Charlie kinda inherited it too from him because when they were on the glass elevator Charlie said it was like a roller coaster, but i would be screaming like a mad lady.

    4) I feel like Charlie is a selfless boy he cares about others and is kind to everyone he isn't spoiled like the other kids. He listens to his family. Also when Grandpa Joe gave his money to Charlie he offered to give it back. This shows that not only is he selfless but so is his family.

  4. 1) I dont think Charlie is selfish. But he isnt really selfless either. Im sure he would give all his food to the others, but he also knows he needs his own food. One example of this is when his mom offers him her bread, and he refuses. But he doesnt offer his food either. I made the conclusion that he wants everyone to have sufficient food.

    2) I think Grandpa Joe is slightly more , well, overreacting than the other old people. When Charlie got the ticket, I thought Grandpa Joe was going to die of excitement. The others didnt jump out of bed and spill soup in each others faces (no offense to old people reading this) because they werent that overreacting.

  5. 3) I believe that Grandpa Joe is a positive influence on Charlie for it gives Charlie a better sense of the poor life that he already lives in. Compared to other grandpas, Grandpa Joe is more open and happy with Charlie and doesn't always seem to act like a 90 year old grandpa. If it wasn't for Grandpa Joe, then Charlie would never have been able to go on the factory tour and thus the book would become boring and continue on Charlie's poor and sad life.

    4) I would classify him as a selfless person because he actually opens his eyes and sees what is around him rather than caring only about himself. One example is when Charlie gets back from buying Grandpa Joe a chocolate bar when he tells his grandpa that he should open it because it was bought with his money. Another example was when Charlie was nice enough to give pieces of his first chocolate bar to everyone in his family.

  6. 3. I think Grandpa Joe is a lot nicer of a Grandpa. I think Charlie wants to be like him. Grandpa Joe really wants to care for everyone though. If they are not getting so much food he will try to share all of his. He is old but he is a really nice Grandpa

    4. I think I would put him as a selfless. He hardly ever wastes any food and doesn't except extra food from anyone. I would also say he is a little but not a lot selfish for buying those 2 extra candy bars from what he found on the floor one day. I also think that he is in a way a very nice character so that is why is is selfless.
